Proof God Exists
How can we prove that God exists? Is that even possible? God is a spirit. We cannot see, touch, or feel Him with our physical senses. God created the universe. We can see His works in the world around us. We use science to explore this world. But science cannot find Him. Science can neither prove nor disprove the existence of God.
Why? Because God is a metaphysical being. The word metaphysical was used first by Aristotle. It means above or beyond the physical. God is above and beyond our physical world. The Bible agrees with this. According to the Bible, God says:
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55: 8-9, NAS)
Philosophy and Science
Philosophy and science have a lot of things in common. For example, neither one is a world-view. A world-view answers the basic questions of life. Remember? Questions such as: Who am I? Why do I exist? Is there a God? Christianity is a world-view. Atheism also is a world-view.
Philosophy and science are methods. They help us analyze the world. They discipline us to explore in a way that is organized.
Science and philosophy use reason to discover laws. They construct theories from these laws. And both search for truth. Science looks for truth in the physical world. Philosophy seeks truth in the metaphysical world. They lead us to ask important questions. They help us find answers.
But how can philosophy examine the metaphysical world? That world is spirit. We think of it as a world of mists and shadows. Our physical senses are useless to examine that world. What tools can we use? We use tools of the mind.
Logic is one of the basic tools of philosophy. Laws of the mind such as the law of non-contradiction also help. Reason and logic are used to develop complex ideas. Infinity and eternity are two of these ideas. These ideas are not opinions. They are the product of careful, logical, rational, disciplined thought.
Metaphysics is more than mists and shadows. The metaphysical world contains absolutes. For example, God exists: yes or no? This question deals with an absolute. Either God exists or He does not. There is no middle ground. There is no room for opinion. Which is truth? Which is a lie? Philosophers use logic and reason to establish the existence of God.
Philosophy Can Prove God Exists? Really?
Did you ever hear this before? Can philosophy prove God exists? I never heard about this in church. The Bible does not use this kind of proof. According to the Bible, God exists. That’s it. His existence is undeniable. Only a fool doubts that God exists. For example, Proverbs 1: 7 says, “Start with GOD—the first step in learning is bowing down to GOD; only fools thumb their noses at such wisdom and learning (from the Bible paraphrase titled The Message).
These proofs did not develop in some back corner. They are well known and well established. One of the first proofs came from Plato. Another came from Aristotle. These two men were really smart. Did they believe in God? Oh, yes! Aristotle developed a proof for God based on pure logic. He used reason to prove that God exists.
This was amazing to me! No one told me the existence of God can be proven by logic and reason. Why wasn’t I told? What happened to these proofs? Why did they disappear from our society?
Sabotaged by Atheism
Atheists and skeptics dominated our society during the Twentieth Century. America was filled with atheists, scoffers, and doubters. Our secular culture was not “God friendly.”
These people disrespected God. Belief in God was old fashioned, they said. It was not scientific. “Of course,” they would say, “some people still go to church. That’s what people do to feel good about themselves. They go to church. But no educated, intelligent person really believes that stuff.” Belief in God, so they said, was not logical. Religion is only based on faith and emotions.
Atheists do not believe in God. But they don’t stop there. They only believe in materialism. They do not accept the existence of anything beyond the physical. Atheists do not believe in any absolutes. They do not believe there is a metaphysical realm.
When they reject God they destroy so many other things. They do not believe in transcendent qualities. There is no truth. Love is only a biological need. Love is nature’s way of tricking us into reproduction. How empty. How ugly. Beauty is meaningless. Justice is opinion. Goodness is foolishness.
If there is no God, our world has no meaning. We live dark, empty lives. Then we die. When we die, we cease to exist. A world without God is so depressing.
There is no morality. The world becomes very cruel. Why would anyone choose to believe in their world? I don’t know. It’s illogical to choose atheism. It’s totally irrational.
Voltaire knew the evil of a world without God. Voltaire believed in God but he was not a Christian. Living in France in the 1700s, he saw the destructive power of atheism. Voltaire once said, “If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent Him.” Si Dieu n’existait pas, il faudrait l’inventer. Voltaire believed in God. He knew our need for God. Civilization cannot continue in a world of atheism.
How very fortunate we are. We do not need to invent a god. Philosophy proves that God exists!
Philosophy’s Proof Is Not Enough
Philosophy’s proofs are not perfect. There is one big problem with them. They cannot tell us anything about God’s personal qualities. They can show us a God. This God is eternal and infinite. He is all powerful. Philosophy tells us He exists but not much more.
Atheists are the first to point this out. They say, “You think you proved God exists?” (we did) “Well, that’s nothing. Your proof says nothing about God. It does not prove the existence of the Christian God.” The atheist is right. Proving the Christian God is the work of revelation. It is a task for the Bible, theologians, and God’s Church.
But look at what these proofs do provide. They give us God. God is the only firm foundation. On this foundation we can define absolutes, develop moral values, and discern transcendent qualities.
Philosophy’s proofs cannot tell us very much about the God of the Bible. Does God love us? Does He even know that we exist? Those questions are answered by the Bible. However, philosophy does prove God exists. These proofs are strong. Only a foolish person would study these proofs and not believe in God.
I invite you to consider these proofs for God. They establish the fact that God must exist. It is illogical and irrational to deny the existence of God.
