God Created the Universe
We live in a beautiful universe!
These beautiful pictures of space come from new technology. Such pictures were not possible before 1990. Earth’s atmosphere blurred images from space. Sharp, clear pictures of deep space were impossible.
But in 1990 NASA placed the Hubble Space Telescope in low orbit. It travels just outside the Earth’s atmosphere. The telescope takes pictures in high focus. The detail in these pictures is remarkable!
Our ability to look into space has improved. The beauty of the heavens is amazing! Why is outer space so stunning? This awesome splendor must have a purpose. God is an awesome God! The heavens proclaim His glory! The Bible says, “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.” (Psalm 19: 1, NAS)
God’s Works Stir Up Praise
Our universe was created by God. God spoke. The heavens and the earth began to exist. The first verse in the Bible says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” God spoke. “Let there be light!” And it was so. Space and time were cloaked in darkness. God spoke. The darkness vanished.
The Bible says the heavenly beings praise the Creator God. Those who behold Him in heaven cannot stop praising Him. They are not forced to do this. God’s splendor evokes their everlasting praise! They cry out, “Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.” (Revelation 4: 11, NAS)
How Do We Fit In?
Can we imagine a Being so powerful? God created the universe. What did He do next? What was His encore? God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness . . .” (Genesis 1: 26a, NAS) God created man and woman.
Why did God create you and me? Was it an afterthought? Was it a mistake? No. The Bible says we are the center of God’s plan.
What is man? What place do we have in this vast universe? We have a special place. According to Psalm 8: 3-8:
When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which You have set in place,
What is man that You are mindful of him,
The son of man that You care for him?
You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings,
And crowned him with glory and honor.
You made him ruler over the works of Your hands;
You put everything under his feet;
All flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field,
The birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,
All that swim the paths of the seas. (NIV)
What have we done to deserve this? You and I have a privileged place in God’s Creation. Why? Not because of anything we have done. Because of God’s grace. God loves us. Beyond all reason, God loves us. Beyond all explanation, God loves us. How baffling! How marvelous!
God Has a Task for Us
God has a task for us. “. . . and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” (Genesis 1: 26b, NAS) God wants us to take care of His Creation.
According to Psalm 115: 16: “The heavens are the heavens of the LORD, But the earth He has given to the sons of men.” (NAS)
God’s amazing power created this universe. God’s amazing love calls us to share this universe in bonds of stewardship and service.
